Edison Opto Provides Secondary Optical Design Services And Introduces A Series Of Optical Complements Solutions
In the past decade, carbon reduction and environmental protection have become the emphasized issues in every country. LED is well-known for high efficacy and slim size; therefore, it has become an alternative replacement for traditional light source. Although LED features high efficiency and power saving, without appropriate optical complements, it may exist some shortcomings such as asymmetrical light pattern, light halo and it can't be looked directly. Hence, secondary optical design is necessary to make the performance of LED similar to the traditional light sources. Secondary optical design is based on the principles of refraction and reflection so that the light which is emitted by LED can project on the desired lighting space. Moreover, secondary optical design can change the light angle and make lighting fixtures present the desired lighting effects.
OLEDs and the beginning of the end for LCDs
by Raghu Das, CEO, IDTechEx LCD panel makers in Taiwan, Japan and Korea have been suffering. Despite the growing demand for LCDs the high number of panel makers and new competition from China has resulted in tough price competition for panel makers, to the point that many panel makers are no longer profitable. In 2012, Samsung Electronics moved their LCD business units into a separate entity. One report suggests that the Taiwanese have invested $60 Billion in the LCD industry and seen a return of just $40 Billion. Some Japanese makers, despite having superb technology, have seen recent losses in some cases equal cumulative profits of the preceeding 5 to 10 years. Restructuring is therefore afoot. In the last few weeks Samsung purchased a 3% stake in Sharp. Japan Display Inc (JDI), puts together small and mid sized LCD panel manufacture units from Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba, focusing on automotive, cellphone and digital camera displays (not TV). Meanwhile, the Chinese are quickly moving into LCD panel production. For many years the top five in the LCD business, in order, were Samsung, LG Display, Innolux, AUO and Sharp. Now, as evidence of China's progress, in late 2012 Chinese BOE is number 5 for notebooks and monitors and China Star (CSOT) number five for TVs.
Samsung Tops Optoelectronics Ranking After Absorbing LED Venture
Samsung Electronics catapulted to the top of the optoelectronics supplier ranking in 2012 from 12th place in 2011 after it gained full ownership of Samsung LED, a 50-50 joint venture in light-emitting diodes that was created in 2009 between Samsung Electronics and affiliate Samsung Electro-Mechanics. In April 2012, the venture was absorbed into Samsung Electronics to strengthen and expand the use of high-brightness LEDs in displays, LCD TVs, and new solid-state lighting products. This transfer increased Samsung's optoelectronics sales by 223% to $2.5 billion in 2012 compared to $780 million in 2011, according to the new 2013 edition of IC Insights' O-S-D Report—A Market Analysis and Forecast for Optoelectronics, Sensors/Actuators, and Discretes.
